Fargo

Fargo is a movie that I definitely love. I have watched it many times and will likely watch it many more. My favourite thing about this film is how long it had me fooled as being a completely true story.

Newsflash!! This is not a true story.

For a movie to be considered “based on a true story” does not actually require much. In this movie’s case, the only part that is actually true is that a man changed serial numbers on vehicles as a way to defraud GM Finance Corporation and fill his own pocket. Therefore, the wife being kidnapped then thrown in a wood chipper are just things the Coen Brothers added to that story to make it much more interesting and comical.

The Coen brothers are talented! The characters they created for the film are absolutely hilarious. Not only are their accents funny but the way they communicate with each other will literally make you laugh. The brothers clearly used stereotypes to emphasize the character’s personalities.

While watching this film and thinking the story is actually truthful it is possible you might find it offensive or uncaring for what happens to the wife. Telling an uncaring story of a woman that was murdered is not a movie you would call a comedy, but the fact the story is not actually true except for a husband that steals from GM, makes this film completely acceptable, and absolutely hilarious. The number of times you will laugh during this movie will make you want to watch it again. You do not need to feel like you are unsympathetic about what happens because nothing bad actually happened.

Another thing you will notice about this film is how close it feels to reality while remaining entertaining. From the sounds you hear to the visualizations you see it will feel like the story is just normal everyday living. The violence in this movie is more than what you would see in a stereotypical comedy which makes this film even better. It’s like taking different emotions and throwing them together. In some scenes, you don’t know if you should be feeling sorry for the person or laugh at what is happening, causing this film to become even more entertaining.

Frances McDormand has been in many films because she is a great actress. This is one of her most memorable roles where she got the chance to prove just how talented she really is. A little-known fact about her is that she has been married to Joel Coen since 1984. They worked together so well on Fargo that the movie became one of my favourite movies of all time.

Overall, this is a great film that you will not regret watching so grab a drink and some popcorn and enjoy!
