Breathless

Overall, I only give this film two out of five beans

When this film was released, it was very popular, not just in France, but in Canada and the United States too; even though the dialogue was in French, not English. Films with subtitles are not common to be in the top ten lists but this one will qualify for a lot of people. I did not hate the film but probably do not like it as much as many others do. To me, the storyline was not as appealing as it probably was to people back in 1960, but the film work, acting, and editing are very impressive.

The main man, Poiccard, who would be attractive to many women was not at all to me. He is needy and clingy and his behaviour is not something I would have patience for. He speaks to her in a certain way to appear like he does not care for her and is better than she is, but he is actually secretly obsessed with her so what happens to viewers is that he looks like a needy cling-on. His behaviour when this film was released was considered ideal, but now his behaviour would be considered stalkerish. I believe Jean-Paul Belmondo, the actor who portrayed Poiccard, was incredible so even though I dislike the character I am impressed by the actor. He played that part so well I was truly feeling like I disliked that guy and had to remind myself he was an actor. I love watching films where actors are that talented because I end up forming an opinion on them, then have to remind myself that is not them, that is them pretending to be someone else, and Belmondo definitely succeeded.

Overall, I think many people would enjoy this film more than me because the acting in it is great and it is entertaining seeing films taking place over 60 years ago, but it is just not a favourite of mine.
